Allen County High School Submissions
The high school section of Hog Creek Review is designed to encourage and support creativity by high school students in Allen County, Ohio. The journal is published annually in May. All current high school students in the county are eligible to submit. Hog Creek Review asks for first publication rights and the right to archive the material on our website. All other rights revert to the author following publication.
Submissions of original work are accepted in the following areas: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, art, and videos (think YouTube). Works will be split into two divisions: freshman/sophomore, junior/senior.
Works may be submitted at any point from February 1 to March 4 of each year.
- Poetry: up to five poems for each student, one poem per page, 50 lines maximum for each poem.
- Fiction: one story, 20 pages maximum, double-spaced.
- Creative Nonfiction (true narratives): one story, 20 pages maximum, double-spaced.
- Art: up to 5 works of art, each submitted as a digital photograph on a CD.
- Performed and Visual Genres: music or videos submitted digitally on a CD.
All submissions must include an entry form signed by a sponsoring teacher at
your high school
Poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction entries must be mailed as paper copies (with the entry form) to Doug Sutton-Ramspeck, 310F Galvin Hall, The Ohio State University at Lima, 4240 Campus Drive, Lima, Ohio 45804. Art works and videos must be mailed on a CD (with entry form) to the same address. Copies of submissions cannot be returned so please do not submit an only copy (the exception of this is with the CD: if you include a self-addressed stamped envelope with sufficient postage, we will return it).
Not every student whose works we publish will necessarily win an award (for them, payment will be publication) but we do hope to offer cash rewards to many students.
In past years the Lima Breakfast Optimists and the Lima Noon Optimists have generously provided funds to use as prize money for high school students. In 2008, for example, they contributed $1,630, which we passed on to high school students as cash awards. We thank the Optimists for their support, and we will continue to offer prize money if we can. The details of these awards will be announced each fall in a letter to the high school Language Arts teachers in Allen County.
In addition to the cash awards, The Ohio State University at Lima has offered in the past $300 scholarship vouchers to the top students in each division. These vouchers may be used by any student who decides to attend our campus, and they are meant to serve as a reward for academic excellence. We hope to continue offering these awards in the future.

Each spring OSU-Lima will sponsor an Awards Ceremony for the high school students selected for publication in Hog Creek Review. The ceremony will include food, samples of the winning works, and the distribution of the awards.
