by the College of Arts & Sciences)
Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce, TX; major course work in
composition/rhetoric; other course work in American literature, drama,
linguistics, pedagogy. Dissertation: "An Empirical Study of the Use of
Holistic Evaluation As a Classroom Activity" (Note: Texas A&M at Commerce
was formerly called East Texas State University.)
--Fall 1996: I took an eight-week course in Distance Learning technology,
pedagogy, and theory at the Fort Wayne, IN campus of Indiana
University/Purdue University. The lecture and discussion were transmitted
via both satellite and circuit-switched interactive television to several
sites in Indiana from the main IU campus in
Bloomington.
--Fall 1997 to Spring 1999: I audited Master's level courses in the
Workplace Education and Lifelong Learning program in Ohio State University's
College of Education. Courses have covered fundamentals of adult education,
history and philosophy of adult education, curriculum design, program
design, and grant writing. Two courses have been transmitted via
interactive television.
II. Professional Experience:
A.--Sept. 1990 to present: Ohio State University, Lima Regional Campus, lecturer in English.
My teaching activities have included:
--courses in English composition, introductory linguistics, and special
literature topics, and a course training undergrads to serve as peer tutors
in a writing tutorial center. I also taught a continuing education writing
course for office workers at Lima's British Petroleum chemical plant;
--administering the Writing Across The Curriculum Center, a peer tutorial
service which I proposed in 1995 and established in 1996.
Other activities have included:
--participation in a Kellogg grant-funded faculty development program
called
Student-Centered Learning Initiative. The SCLI is sponsored by the OSU
College of Environment, Agriculture, and Food Science. The theory
base of the project is based on W. Edwards Deming's work in Total Quality
Management, a powerful force in industry management. SCLI takes TQM and
translates it into education terms, taking such forms as negotiated learning
contracts and collaborative learning.
B.--Sept. 1989-May 1990: Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce, TX; Literature and Languages Department, Instructor.
My activities included teaching Freshman Composition, as well as an ACT preparation course and a children's writing workshop, both for Continuing Education.
C.--Sept. 1986- May 1989 Sul Ross State University, Alpine, TX; Language and Literature Department, Lecturer.
My activities included:
--teaching all levels of Freshman Composition, and working with colleagues
to plan policy and procedures and select texts for freshman composition;
-- serving on Educational Support Services Committee for the Institutional
Self-Study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools;
--chairing the Instructional Support Subcommittee for the SACS Self-Study;
--serving as faculty advisor for the Program Council, a body of faculty and
students who plan and coordinate campus entertainment;
-- taking photographs for the Sul Ross Archives of the Texas Cowboy Poetry
Gathering, a joint effort by SRSU and the Alpine Chamber of Commerce, 1988
and 1989;
--serving as president of Sul Ross chapter of Texas Association of College
Teachers, elected Fall 1988.
D.--Sept. 1980-Aug. 1986: Texas A&M University-Commerce, Department of Literature and Languages, Assistant Instructor.
My activities included:
--teaching Freshman Composition courses, study skills and speed reading; a
junior level business writing course;
--tutoring in both reading and writing labs;
--serving on evaluation panels for freshman and junior writing courses.
