Why Become an “Honors Student"

The best reason for choosing to participate in the Honors Program at OSU Lima is that you will get a better education.

Additionally, down the road you may want to continue your education and enroll in a graduate school or a professional school, to study law, medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine. Nearly all of the applicants to advanced degree programs will have had good grades; so, a high GPA may not be enough to get you selected. Selection committees are looking for students that have demonstrated more than their ability to get good grades. Participation in an Honors Program is one way that a student can distinguish his/herself.

Membership Requirements

Entering freshmen with an ACT composite score of 29 or above and a ranking in the top 10% of their high school class are automatically admitted to the Honors Program at Ohio State Lima. Entering freshmen with an ACT composite score of 25-28 are invited to be “Honors Candidates”. These students can earn admission to the honors Program by demonstrating high quality academic performance.

Special Honors Awards

The Ohio State Lima Honors Program gives financial awards to Honors Students who perform exceptionally well in Honors Courses. We give "Book Awards" of $100 for each Honors Course (maximum of 3 per course, i.e. up to 18 per year.) "Tuition Awards" of $1000 (maximum of 3 per year) are awarded to outstanding Honors Students who have taken at least two Honors Courses in a given year. These awards are administered by the Honors Program and are based solely on merit.

Honors Recognitions

An H is placed along with the course number on the student's transcript to designate successful completion of an honors course, an HE for an honors embedded course.

Freshman Honors Students are eligible for membership in the honorary societies, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma, both with active chapters in Columbus.

Outstanding students are eligible to receive a variety of additional awards, such as the John W. Hevener Award, or the John T. Mount Academic Excellence Award.

Finally, students meeting certain special qualifications may receive special recognition at graduation. The designation "with Honors in ____" or "with Distinction in ________" may be earned with a degree. In addition to a high level of achievement as indicated by GPA, the former requires a specified minimum amount of honors coursework, while the latter requires the completion of a senior honors thesis. An exceptional student may earn both. The designation Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude, for students graduating in the top 6% and 1.5% of their classes respectively, are also available.
