JAPANESE 231N SYLLABUS
OSU/LIMA – FALL QUARTER 2004
COURSE: ELEMENTS OF JAPANESE CULTURE
231N – 05 Credit Hours
Call No.: 30117-8
Instructor: Sandra Liechty: phoebe@bright.net
Mon./ Weds. 5:30-7:30PM Galvin Hall Rm: tba
This course will introduce some basic and important elements of
Japanese culture for the purpose of helping the student understand
modern-day Japan and the interdependence of our two nations. An
interdisciplinary approach will be followed, drawing from the fields of
anthropology, art, business, geography, history, literature, politics and
religion.
The material will be presented through the use of selected chapters of our
text, The Japanese Today, Change And Continuity, by Edwin O.
Reischauer, former US ambassador to Japan, (revised and updated by Marius
Jansen of Princeton University) along with lectures, supplementary handouts,
video clips and assigned reading. A three ring notebook is recommended for
the organization of supplementary materials and should provide the student a
valuable resource for future reference and use. (Particularly for Education
majors.)
Each student will bring in a minimum of four current events on Japan
from the mass media for the Quarter. These will be shared and discussed in
class to provide a dialectic between contemporary issues/events and rich
historical traditions.
TEXT: The Japanese Today, Change And Continuity,(Enlarged
Edition, by Edwin O. Reischauer and Marius B. Jansen, Belknap Press of
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1995. (Paperback). A
Calendar of assigned reading will be provided.
