Spanish 1102

Prerequisite

The prerequisite for Spanish 1102 is Spanish 1101 earned through regular course enrollment, MultiCAT Placement Test, or Transfer Credit.

Texts and materials

Long, Macián, Amistades (package.)  his bundle contains the text (2nd and most current edition), the student workbook/lab manual, and a PIN card which grants  access to the Amistades web site

Spanish/English Dictionary (your choice)

 Course Objectives

Spanish 1102 is the second course of a three course sequence (1101, 1102, 1103, which leads to the fulfillment of the foreign language requirement. Spanish is the primary language of instruction. The general goal of the course is to develop basic language skills. During this course students will: 

 

  • Sharing ideas and beliefs using comparisons of similarity and difference; the use of the imperfect tense to narrate habitual and/or childhood activities; and the preterite tense for talking about completed past events; commands in the context of health and human body, present subjunctive and food; imperfect subjunctive and interpersonal relations, future tense, conditional, and conditional sentences for talking about travel.

  • Listen to more complex passages, or conversations, and answer questions about the content.

  • Read more complex authentic texts and answer questions about the content.

  • Write paragraphs using acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • Engage in, and sustain face to face conversation with others about topics studied.

  • Continue to use the Internet to acquire information about the Spanish speaking world.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of selected element of various Hispanic cultures.

Requirements:

 In-class compositions: each composition is 5% of your grade.

 Speaking test: you will role-play a situation in a small group.

Course grades will be based on the following evaluation:

15%     tarea  (homework)

5%       participación

30%     3 exámenes

10%     2 composiciones

10%     examen oral

30%     examen final

Attendance and Class Participation

Regular attendance and participation in class activities are essential to be a successful language learner. In order for students to progress in understanding and speaking Spanish, they must hear and speak it on a daily basis. Therefore, students must prepare carefully for class by completing all assignments in advance and be ready to participate in class. Students will be graded on individual, pair, and group activities.  Students must not miss more than two classes.
