Lima, OH- For the Barons Baseball team, their 3rd week was full of ups and downs as they won 2 and lost 4 on the week. Wins this week came against ORCC foes OSU Newark (12 to 7), and OU Zanesville (3 to 2), while the losses were to Miami Hamilton (13 to 5), OU Zanesville (19 to 9) in the 1st game of a doubleheader, and a doubleheader sweep by OSU Mansfield (9 to 2 & 13 to 8). The Barons now find themselves at 3 & 1 in ORCC play and 7 & 10 overall.
Despite the losing record for the Barons on the week, there were still some good things accomplished. Sophomore centerfielder Adam Hemker continued to lead the way for them offensively as he is now batting .472, with an OBP of .569, and a slugging percentage of .849. Freshman Cory Echols is continuing his solid first year with a .396 batting average plus he recorded his first collegiate homerun versus OU Zanesville, while surging sophomore Alan Hankinson is now batting .345 after getting hits in 9 of his last 20 at bats.
On the mound, the Barons are being led by Echols, with a record of 3 & 1, with an ERA of 4.30 in 23 innings pitched. Also contributing on the mound are sophomore Codie Roberts who is 1 & 2 despite a 2.89 ERA in 18 2/3 innings, freshmen Greg Patterson and Dustin Craig have also been strong in relief and starting roles for the Barons as they both have records of 1 & 1, while Craig has also recorded a save on the year.
“We are really close in so many areas, I am expecting to see a big upswing by these Barons soon. Once we put some of these pieces together we can start to do some great things” commented an optimistic Head Coach Abe Ambroza.
The Barons return to action with a tough mid week road swing heading to Miami Hamilton for a Evening matchup on Wednesday at 7pm, then back on the road again to OU Lancaster for a 4pm start on Thursday. Then, on Saturday the Barons get to return home as they host OSU Newark for a doubleheader starting at 1pm. Come out and support your Barons, admission is free to all home games!
