Lima, OH- The 4th week of the Barons season is complete, with the Barons now in 1st place of the ORCC East division with an in conference record of 6&1. On the week, they topped OU Lancaster (8 to 2), and swept a DH from OSU Newark (10 to 6 & 16 to 15), while going down in a non conference matchup with MU Hamilton (16 to 1). The Barons are now just one game under .500 overall at 10 & 11.
In the win over OU Lancaster, the Barons went with 4 pitchers to shut down the Cougar offense. Freshman Cory Echols started, earning the win throwing just 2 innings on a scheduled shortened outing, not allowing a run. In relief the Barons used; Freshman Dustin Craig, 2 innings with 1 run allowed, Freshman Justin Dunlap, 2 innings with 1 run allowed, and Sophomore Codie Roberts, 1 inning with 0 runs allowed. Offensively the Barons were led by Freshman David Wurst who went 3 for 3, with two doubles and 2 runs scored.
On Saturday, the Barons swept a doubleheader versus OSU Newark with some very hot bats. Echols got the win, raising his record to 5 & 1, throwing a complete game allowing 6 runs, but only 1 earned. The hero of the day was Freshman catcher Ryan Kortokrax who won the game with his bat in dramatic fashion driving a walkoff game winning grand slam to right field in the bottom of the 7th inning. It was the first homerun of Kortokrax’s college career.
Game two was a game that the Barons were fortunate to be the last team getting to hit as they survived that offensive battle by outscoring OSU Newark 16 to 15. Codie Roberts earned the victory raising his record to 2 & 2, while Dustin Craig earned his 3rd save of the season throwing the last 4 innings of the game. Offensively the Barons were solid from top to bottom, as all 9 spots in the order recorded hits, with Sophomore Alan Hankinson going 3 for 5, Sophomore Adam Hemker going 3 for 4, Freshman Greg Patterson going 4 for 4, and Wurst going 2 for 3.
The Barons return to action with the same OSU Newark squad in the final game of their 4 game season series on Tuesday. They then return home for a long home swing on Wednesday in a non conference tilt with Cincinnati Christian University. Over the weekend the Barons will host OU Zanesville in a doubleheader matchup on Saturday then a nonconference doubleheader with Miami Middletown on Sunday.
