Barons in the hunt for ORCC Title

10/11/11

Lima, OH – The Barons Volleyball team is entering the final week of the season, very much in the hunt for an ORCC Title. However, they need to win out and get help from some of the other ORCC contests still to be played.

A nice boost for the Barons is that Miranda Strous has been cleared to play.  She has missed the majority of the season with an LCL injury.  “The team really missed Miranda’s leadership on the court.  But the other players on the team stepped up, and that is why we are 4-1 in the conference”, said Coach Ricker.

The Barons have had high goals all season, especially following the tough 2010 season. First was to have a winning record, which at 8 & 9 currently is definitely possible, and second was to compete for an ORCC Title both regular season, and in the year end tournament. Clearly, they are living up to their own high goals as they’re following their team motto of, “Play Hard, Play Smart, & Win!”

Coach Ricker was asked how the team is finding so much success. “The girls are learning how to finish games and win.We have been focusing all season on playing aggressive and minimizing errors. In addition, especially this past week I have been trying to focus the player’s attention on controlling their own attitude and effort on the court and instilling the concept of mental toughness.”

When asked about the marathon match versus Wright State Lake and what it means to the young team to pull out a win like that, Coach Ricker’s reply was, “Last night, that match with Wright State Lake was a 5 set battle! The team played hard all the way to the end and did not make the same mental errors that we were making at the beginning of the season. I am just really pleased with progress of each member of this team.”

The Barons final 3 games of the regular season are at current ORCC leader, Miami Hamilton October 12th, at Ohio Chillicothe October 15th, and then home to close it out versus OSU Mansfield on October 17th. Then, the ORC State Tournament will be taking place October 21st through the 23rd.
