Lima, OH – Saturday the Lady Barons fell behind early to the University of Akron Wayne Lady Warriors, but were able to fight back and gain their fourth win of the season 66 to 62 thanks in large part to their 12 made three pointers on the day.
UAW was controlling the game at the start, in large part due to their huge advantage in rebounds, more than doubling the number of rebounds the Lady Barons were able to get for the first 30 minutes of the game. However, with 9:34 remaining, and the Lady Barons trailing by one point, they were able to noticeably pick up the intensity by going after some loose balls and beating UAW to some long rebounds as well. The Lady Barons got the lead at that 9:34 mark with a long range jumper by Lauren McKinley (Kenton) and they never relinquished the lead from that point on.
With 1:00 remaining Kayla Doepker (Lima Central Catholic) had a nice drive to the hole to put the Lady Barons up 61 to 59. That was followed up by a forced turnover and a nice mid range jumper by Danielle Dangler (Paulding) to increase the lead to four at 63 to 59. UAW answered with a quick three pointer, and fouled Allison Brodman (Bluffton) immediately on the inbounds pass. Brodman knocked down both shots from the line with 0:15 left in the game to give the Lady Barons another three point lead at 65 to 62. The Lady Barons defense then forced another UAW turnover and added another point to their total with McKinley knocking down one of two free throws to make the final score 66 to 62.
Leading the way for the Lady Barons was Lauren McKinley with 25, 18 of which came off made three pointers. Dangler, Rachel Davis (Lima Temple Christian), Brodman, and Courtney Mauk (Bath) all also added to the Lady Barons three point barrage on the night.
The Lady Barons next two regular season games are both at home, starting with Saturday, February 9th as they host the UC Clermont in “The Hangar” in Cook Hall. Tip off is set for 1pm.
