A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard involves two desperate families connected by the marriage of the son of one (Jake) to the daughter of the other (Beth). After a savage beating from Jake leaves her brain damaged, Beth goes off to live with her parents. Jake sends his brother, Frankie, to see if Beth is dead or alive, but Beths father mistakes Frankie for a poacher, shoots him in the leg and takes him prisoner. From this point forward, the tensions that motivate the two families grow increasingly disturbing and dangerous. Frankie falls in love with Beth and Jakes possessive mother tries to keep him from regaining his wife. In the end, Jake loses his will and seeks order and meaning in the present by coming to terms with his haunting past.
