State Lima professor receives distinguished teaching award
Ed Valentine, associate professor of art at The Ohio State University at Lima, is one of 11 Ohio State professors receiving the 2011 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee will present the award to Valentine at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2011, during his day-long visit to Ohio State Lima.
The Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching honors faculty members for teaching excellence. Recipients are nominated by students, alumni and faculty and are chosen by a committee of students, previous recipients and alumni. There were more than 600 nominations this year.
“Ed is a wonderful example of the dedication our faculty have to teaching and to their students,” said Dr. John R. Snyder, dean and director of Ohio State Lima. “We are so proud of the way he engages his students in the visual arts and shares his expertise to help them see the world from a different perspective.”
During his 14 years at Ohio State Lima, Valentine has taught drawing and painting classes. Outside the classroom, he is an accomplished painter, having more than a dozen solo exhibitions in New York City and Los Angeles as well as the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, Ostrava, The Czech Republic, and the Atrium Gallery in Prague. His work has been part of group exhibitions in Paris, Tokyo and The United Arab Emirate. Valentine also has three paintings in the permanent collection of the contemporary wing at the National Gallery in Prague. In September, Valentine will open the season at the Linda Warren Gallery in Chicago.
Valentine is Ohio State Lima’s ninth winner of this award. Former winners from Ohio State Lima include Dr. Javad Abdalkhani, associate professor of mathematics; Dr. William V. Ackerman, associate professor of geography; Dr. David S. Adams, associate professor emeritus of sociology; Dr. Joseph E. Brandesky, professor of theatre; Dr. Allison Gilmore, associate professor of history; Dr. Joseph P. Green, professor of psychology; Dr. J. Eric Juterbock, associate professor of evolution, ecology and organismal biology; and Dr. Mohamed Yousif, professor of mathematics.
Valentine will be inducted into the Academy of Teaching, which provides leadership for the improvement of teaching at Ohio State. In addition, he will receive a cash award, an increase in base salary and a plaque.
