Mental Health Fair puts students in touch with campus, community resources
The Lima Campus Counseling and Consultation Services at The Ohio State University at Lima, the Rhodes State College Counseling Services and the Office of Student Activities at Ohio State Lima and Rhodes State host the first-ever Mental Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wed., April 27, 2011, in the Galvin Hall Lobby.
“We hope to raise awareness about the resources that are available to students,” said Samantha Haudenschield, PsyD, therapist with Ohio State Lima’s Counseling and Consultation Services, “and also to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues.”
Students will have the opportunity to learn about counseling services available on campus and in the community, take advantage of free, confidential drug, alcohol and HIV screenings, and participate in the Graffiti Wall and PostSecret event. The Graffiti Wall provides a place for students to artistically share their thoughts and leave their mark on campus. The PostSecret event allows students to anonymously share a secret on a postcard that will be displayed on campus.
PostSecret started in 2004 as a blog that displayed people’s secrets. Since then, it has swept across college campuses and the blogger has found that for the senders, sharing these secrets is a release. It helps them to feel that the secret no longer controls their lives. Readers of the secrets learn that they aren’t the only ones carrying such secrets and this act often leads them to change something about their lives.
