Biography of Mayor David J. Berger
Degrees Obtained: Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, Philosophy
Mayor David J. Berger leads a professional life that embodies education through citizenship. He is dedicated to supporting education as the driving force for personal and community growth, working tirelessly to ensure that West Central Ohio has high quality educational options.
Ohio State Lima is the educational pillar that it is today because of Mayor Berger’s efforts in the 1990s to spearhead the Joint Higher Education Task Force, whose mission was to retain an Ohio State presence in Lima in the form of a four-year university. Mayor Berger resisted the pressure to be served by a community or technical college, and today, Ohio State Lima has expanded its curriculum to include eight bachelor’s degrees and four master’s degrees.
Other signs of Mayor Berger’s commitment to the Lima community include working to save and expand military production at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, securing funds to develop an industrial park for agribusiness and proactively marketing the Lima area for auto-related investments through the organization of the Lima Auto Task Force.
Mayor Berger currently serves on the Energy Committee of the United States Conference of Mayors, and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Ohio Municipal League.
His service has garnered several awards for Mayor Berger. He was the Visionary of the Year for the Allen County Visionaries in 1997. He also won the Ohio Humanitarian Award through the Ohio Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission in 1990 and the Alumni Community Service Award from the Catholic University of America.
The Violet I. Meek Town and Gown Award honorees personify the idea of Disciplina in civitatem, or education for citizenship, the motto of The Ohio State University. Berger is the ninth recipient. The award is named for Violet I. Meek, who retired as Dean and Director in 2003 after 12 years in the position at Ohio State Lima. During her tenure, she was an ardent supporter and promoter of community growth and increased interaction between the University and the people and communities in its service area. As such, the Board of Trustees created an award in her honor to recognize those working toward similar goals. Past winners include David S. Adams, Associate Professor Emeritus of Sociology; Tom Francis, a popular media personality in Lima whose activities have centered around his commitment to the University and the community; Clyde Rauch, the president of Tuttle Services who has worked diligently with Ohio State Lima and its co-located institution; Bob Schulte, co-owner and Executive President of Spherion of Lima, Inc., who is currently serving as a campaign co-chair for Ohio State Lima’s comprehensive campaign; William V. Ackerman, Associate Professor of Geography; Jaye E. McCain, a financial advisor for Edward Jones and Associates, who is currently serving as a campaign co-chair for Ohio State Lima’s comprehensive campaign; Dr. Jon E. Rockhold, a former Special Assistant to the Dean and Director with a strong record of outstanding professional leadership in the community; and Ora “Bud” Winzenried, past president of Kenton Structural and Ornamental Iron Works and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Ohio State Alumni Association.
