Barons baseball opens season in the South

The Barons baseball team kicks off its season with stops at three colleges in the South, beginning at Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, on Sat., March 9, 2013; then travelling to Bluefield College in Virginia for a three-game series March 11-12, 2013; and finishing up with a four-game series at Georgia Gwinnett College March 14-16, 2013.

"As an Ohio college baseball program, we simply must travel south to get our season started as early as we need to," said Abe Ambroza, Barons baseball head coach. "We aspire to compete for titles, and feel playing competition like this early on in some warmer climates gives us the best opportunity to do just that."

Heading into the 2013 baseball season, the Barons have a mix of experienced veterans and talented newcomers around the horn, on the mound and in the outfield.

"We have perhaps the best mix of experience and skill that we have had in my four years here," said Ambroza. "The depth of talent that we have at every position is a great strength of ours this year. I have confidence in so many of our young men in several different roles. It should be an exciting year."

Several of the Barons infielders and outfielders will see time split at all positions. The team also has four catchers, all of whom may see time behind the plate. Ambroza says the pitching staff may the strongest that the team has had in years, with seven potential starters. Overall, he is pleased with the position flexibility on the team this year.

Students from Ohio State Lima and Rhodes State are eligible to play for the Barons. The teams compete against other colleges in the Ohio Regional Campus Conference (ORCC). There is a regular season champion named and a state tournament held each year.
