'It's About Discovery' students cap off STEM project with Husky

Students from Wapakoneta High School will visit Lima Husky Refinery, 1150 South Metcalf Street, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Fri., May 3, 2013, to present projects that are the culmination of a multi-part program exploring careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, with an emphasis on the energy industry.

The Advanced Placement (AP) physics class is part of "It’s About Discovery," an Ohio State Lima-led and National Science Foundation-funded program that engages high school students and their teachers in critical thinking skills focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, or STEM, content areas. One of the goals of the program is to advance public-private partnerships that encourage STEM education and highlight STEM careers in our region.

The Husky team and Dave Pepple, Wapakoneta High School science teacher, designed a series of programs that began this spring with Husky engineers visiting the high school to discuss their careers. From there, students were assigned group projects that related to energy and/or the refining industry. The 40 high school juniors and seniors then visited Lima Husky Refinery to learn more about the industry and take a plant tour, allowing them to link their classroom learning to real-world applications. In this final part of the project, the students will return to Husky to present their projects to the engineers. The topics range from energy transfer to energy policies and from storage and safety to the differences in fuel types.

The Husky contact is Beth Keehn. She can be reached at (419) 226-2745.
