Valentine to open exhibition in New York City art gallery

Ed Valentine, professor of art at The Ohio State University at Lima, is the featured artist at Envoy Enterprises in New York City with his solo exhibition, Ed Valentine"Paintings 1997-2014," May 18-June 22, 2014. The opening reception for his exhibition is from 4-6 p.m., Sun., May 18, 2014.

"Paintings 1997-2014" will feature a collection of Valentine’s portraiture paintings. Valentine combines drawing and painting into an artistic form that is more than the sum of its parts. His work is simple and sparse, containing solely the figures and abstract geometry he finds necessary to convey his imagination. Bold and colorful portrait paintings employing his personal visual language alternate with near-abstract compositions.

"For me it simply all boils down to making slightly odd and interesting things to look at, things which are halting and provoke a level of inquiry. That is what motivates me as a painter. It is mostly no more complicated than that," said Valentine. "Of course there are specifics and complexities within each series, but other than titles from time to time and a few words, clarification just seems to deflate the work."

Valentine has taught drawing and painting classes at Ohio State Lima since 1997. His dedication to students earned him the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2011, which honors Ohio State faculty members for teaching excellence. Outside the classroom, he is an accomplished painter, having more than a dozen solo exhibitions in New York City and Los Angeles as well as the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre, Ostrava, the Czech Republic, and the Atrium Gallery in Prague. His work has been part of group exhibitions in Paris, Tokyo and the United Arab Emirates. Valentine also has three paintings in the permanent collection of the contemporary wing at the National Gallery in Prague.
