Ohio State Lima becomes National Board Certification support site for K-12 teachers

Orientations for certification program begin Feb. 12

The Ohio State University at Lima, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Education and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, will serve as a regional site for National Board Certification. NBC is an advanced teaching credential that measures what a teacher knows and is able to do.

“A growing body of research shows that Board certified teachers have a greater impact on students’ academic performance,” said Dawn Wingate, Ohio State Lima Program Coordinator. “National Board Certification is a rigorous process which includes assessment of subject knowledge, submissions of video recordings of classroom instruction and examples of student work. Teachers who pursue this certification have made a commitment to excellence to their students. NB Certification advances the quality of teaching and learning.”

Orientations for this voluntary assessment program will be held in Lima, Bellefontaine and Wapakoneta. Prospective students must attend one of the following orientation sessions:

The Ohio State University at Lima
4240 Campus Drive, Lima
Public Service, Room 212
Feb. 12, Feb. 19, and March 13
5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Ohio State Lima Bellefontaine Center at Ohio HiPoint JVS
2280 State Route 540, Bellefontaine
Technology Classroom 600 Hallway (close to student parking lot)
Feb. 13, Feb. 28, and March 11
5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Auglaize County ESC
1045 Dearbaugh Ave., Wapakoneta
Feb. 14, Feb. 26, and March 12
5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Eligibility requirements for the Certification include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, completion of three years of teaching, and a valid state teaching license certificate. National Board Certification complements, but does not replace, a state’s teacher license. Since there are few educators in the area who have this distinction, Ohio State Lima is expecting teachers to accept this challenge and become a nationally recognized educator.

The normal process time for completion of the program is one year, but the National Board gives candidates up to three years to complete the certification process. Ohio State will grant six graduate hours of credit for completing all work required for certification. The Ohio Department of Education will provide a grant to help offset the cost of application through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Interested candidates must attend an orientation session to receive ODE funding. To register for an orientation, visit the website at http://limabuckeyes.osu.edu, enter access code NBC, and select the date and location for the desired orientation.
