Ohio State Lima offers Family Fun Day to battle obesity at the AC Museum

Program helps children make healthy choices

Children and families can learn together how to make healthy choices as part of an ongoing series of Family Fun Days from Ohio State Lima throughout the region. The program will be offered free of charge from 1:00-2:30 p.m., Sat., June 7, 2008, at the Allen County Museum.

“Study after study has shown that our children are increasingly susceptible to weight-related health issues. By educating them early on healthy lifestyle choices, our goal is to stem the rising rates of childhood obesity,” said Sara Newman, K-12 Outreach Program Facilitator at Ohio State Lima.

The Family Fun Day series is an outgrowth of Ohio State Lima’s Give Me Five program which offers an innovative approach to learning about healthy choices and preventing childhood obesity. Give Me Five was originally developed as a school-based outreach program for all Allen County first graders. With additional funding from the Allen County Health Department, the program has been expanded to include activities for the entire family. The program is offered to the community at no cost to the host institutions or the participants. Door prizes and giveaways will be available that encourage physical activity and healthy habits.

The Give Me Five program was originally developed through a partnership between the Ohio State Lima K-12 Outreach Program, the Allen County Health Department, Ohio State Extension—Allen County, and the Girlscouts of Appleseed Ridge. The project was also made possible by funding through OSU CARES, an initiative of Ohio State University Extension and The Ohio State University to expand faculty, staff and student partnerships with communities throughout Ohio. St. Rita’s Medical Center is also a partner in the Family Fun Day.
