Ohio State Lima’s First Year Experience program wins national advocacy award

Ohio State Lima’s Dr. Steven Higgins has been named one of the 2009 Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award winners by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience & Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina and Wadsworth/CenageLearning. The award, now in its sixteenth year, honors college faculty, administrators, staff, and students for their outstanding work on behalf of first-year students and for the impact their efforts have on the students and culture of their institutions.

“At Ohio State, we have learned through experience and research that the habits students form and the experiences they have during their first year are critical,” said Dr. John R. Snyder, Dean and Director at Ohio State Lima. “Dr. Higgins and the entire FYE team work throughout the year to make sure our students have all the tools and the assistance they need to build a strong foundation for their entire University experience.”

Ten award recipients were chosen from 84 nominations. This year’s recipients will be formally recognized on February 8, 2009, at the Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience in Orlando, Florida. The other 2009 recipients come from Corning Community College, Whittier College, College of Lake County, Butler University, Dalton State College, Kennesaw State University, Duke University, University of North Carolina- Wilmington, and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

The National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition supports and advances efforts to improve student learning and transitions into and through higher education by providing opportunities for the exchange of practical, theory-based information and ideas through the convening of conferences, teleconferences, institutes, and workshops; publishing monographs, a peer-reviewed journal, an electronic newsletter, guides, and books; generating and supporting research and scholarship; hosting visiting scholars; and administering a web site and listservs.
