John Hellmann came to OSU-Lima in 1977 after earning his Ph.D. in English from Kent State University.  His first book was a study of experiments in literary journalism during the 1960s entitled FABLES OF FACT: THE NEW JOURNALISM AS NEW FICTION (1981).  During 1983-84 he was the recipient of an award from the American Council of Learned Societies that supported his study of the effect of the Vietnam War on American culture.  AMERICAN MYTH AND THE LEGACY OF VIETNAM was published in 1986 by Columbia University Press.  He has twice served as a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in Europe, at the University of Antwerp in 1984 and at the University of Bonn in 1992-93.  In 1993 he was promoted to the rank of full professor. His third book, THE KENNEDY OBSESSION: THE AMERICAN MYTH OF JFK, was published by Columbia  in 1997.  He teaches courses in American literature, film, and culture, and is currently working on a book on the films of Alfred Hitchcock.
