Conference aims to expand horizons of young girls in science, math and technology

Northwest Pilot Stephanie Johnson to speak

The Ohio State University at Lima will host the Expanding Your Horizons Through Math, Science and Technology Conference from 9:00 a.m.-3:20 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005. The conference is a fun-filled day intended for girls in 7th and 8th grade, their parents and teachers.

"The goal of the camp is to offer the young women of our community an opportunity to interact with professional women from all over the state of Ohio,” said Lynn Trinko, director of the EYH conference. “The day camp will give them chances to work side by side with women professionals doing hands-on activities."

Participants will be able to choose from a variety of workshops. Some of the available topics will include Move Into Physics, Surf's Up! Internet Research Workshop, CSI-LIMA, Investing ABC - Test the Waters of the Stock Market, Glaciers – Rivers of Ice, and Math? In Quilting? Visit the EYH website for a complete listing at lima.osu.edu/events/EYH.

The keynote speaker is Stephanie Johnson, the first and currently only black female serving as a pilot for Northwest Airlines. She will talk about “A Woman’s Place? On the Flight Deck.”

A complete list of workshops and registration materials will be available in the schools the first week of school.  Registrations will be due September 9. Young women who will be seventh or eighth grades in Autumn 2005 are eligible for the camp.

The cost for the day is $10.00 per child and includes workshop supplies, morning and afternoon snacks, lunch and a T-shirt. Workshops will be limited to 15 students per class. The camp has slots for 100 participants and they will fill up fast. Please register early!

The Expanding Your Horizons Conference is made possible by a grant from the Office of the President at Ohio State. The Expanding Your Horizons grant proposal successfully competed with others from Ohio State regional campuses. The proposals had to show how the project would contribute to the University’s Outreach and Engagement or Diversity goals and the Academic Plan.
