Steve Higgins

I was born and raised in Sidney, Ohio. In 1972 I received a bachelor’ degree from Bowling Green State University and taught at Ft. Loramie High School from 1973-1976. I then returned to Bowling Green for a master’s degree. Upon completing the degree in 1977, I began my career at OSU Lima serving as Coordinator of Developmental Education. While maintaining this position, I attended evening classes at the University of Toledo and earned my doctorate in 1997. Two years later I was appointed as Director of the Philip A. Heath Center for Teaching & Learning. Thus, I have proudly worked at OSU Lima for over 3 decades.

My role in First Year Experience involves several aspects. I recruit Buckeye Contacts, upper classmen who serve as mentors for first-quarter students. As seasoned students, Buckeye Contacts answer questions and concerns that many of our students have as new collegians. I coordinate the Dean’s Convocation & Picnic. This is the official welcome for all students new to Ohio State, and the event takes place the day before the start of fall classes. I also organize road trips to the Columbus Campus each fall and spring. A 47-passenger bus is chartered, taking students to the Homecoming football game in October, as well as to the Scarlet & Gray Game in April. And throughout the academic year I organize the Success Series, providing new students learning opportunities beyond the classroom. The Series comprises a variety of presentations concerning personal finances, career selection, mental health issues, internet safety, as well as many rich experiences with the performing arts.
