March 06, 2013  -  Distracted Driving Simulator

The Office of Student Activities brings the Distracted Driver Simulator to campus as part of the Student Health Fair. The simulator features a computer-generated simulation of texting while driving. The set-up includes a steering wheel, turn indicators, gas and brake pedals. After buckling up, the driver takes the wheel and tries to drive with distractions. The participant receives a phone call, sends a text message and listens to passenger conversations while driving. It doesnt take long before the driver makes an error and is involved in a crash that results in simulated interactions with police, medical staff and a judge. ODOT uses the simulator as a tool to educate drivers and the public about the dangers of distracted driving. ODOT also uses it as a tool to discuss other safety issues, such as roadway departure and intersection crashes, seat belt use, speed and drunk driving, which contribute to hundreds of deaths each year.
