March 07, 2013  -  Distracted Driver Simulator

The Office of Student Activities brings the Distracted Driver Simulator to campus as part of the Student Health Fair. The simulator features a computer-generated simulation of texting while driving. The set-up includes a steering wheel, turn indicators, gas and brake pedals. After buckling up, the driver takes the wheel and tries to drive with distractions. In the distracted driver scenario, the participant receives a phone call, sends a text message and listens to passenger conversations while driving. In the impaired driving scenario, the simulator handles as though the driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In either scenario, it doesn’t take long before the driver makes an error and is involved in a crash that results in realistic simulated interactions with police, medical staff and a judge. ODOT uses the simulator as a tool to educate drivers and the public about the dangers of distracted driving. ODOT also uses it as a tool to discuss other safety issues, such as roadway departure and intersection crashes, seat belt use, speed and drunk driving, which contribute to hundreds of deaths each year.
