Gail Nelson

I was born in Maria Stein and graduated from Marion Local High School. In 2006 I graduated from The Ohio State University with my Bachelor’s of Science in Social Work and worked for Harmony Reins, Inc. as a Licensed Social worker. While completing my undergraduate degree I worked in the Admissions office at OSU Lima for 4 years. In 2007 I returned to OSU Lima as an admissions counselor. Shortly, after returning I began to provide behavioral health services to students and became a student advocate. In 2009, I was given the opportunity to become the Coordinator of First Year Experience. In 2010 I received my Masters of Social Work from The Ohio State University.

Currently my role in First Year Experience includes coordinating new student orientation, teaching the undergraduate survey course, and coordinating the Passport to Lima program. I continue to advocate for students on campus which was established to help students navigate through their campus experiences. I answer students’ questions, direct them to the appropriate departments and people, familiarize them with university policies and procedures, and give students guidance as they look at ways to solve problems and make choices. Meanwhile, providing behavioral health services through OSU Lima Counseling and Consultation Services.

One of my favorite parts of working at The Ohio State University at Lima is getting to work with students from the time they are thinking about applying, all the way into their first year! I recruit students in a ten county area from Putnam county, on up into Lucas county. I love getting to go and talk with high school students about their choices for college and why they should chose the #1 school in the state of Ohio! After they apply, I get to help students figure out how to pay for college in Financial Aid. It is such a pleasure for me to assist with families with finding ways to help pay for college. We give a ton of scholarships away and I always love to watch students get FREE MONEY! Then when all the paperwork is done, I get to help students enjoy their first year here on campus in FYE.

I remember how nervous I was going into college, and all that fear and excitement that goes along with starting something new. I ended up loving college so much that I found a career so I never have to leave! As a member of the FYE team, I hope to help new freshmen love their college experience too! I have had the opportunity to get to do some neat things with the freshmen like challenging them in games, pumpkin carving contests, and traveling with them to Washington D.C. and Maryland! I also attempt to coach the Faculty/Staff team for the Faculty/Staff vs Student games.

Higher Education is definitely a passion of mine, so the chance to do this for a living is a dream come true! I am a proud graduate of Columbus Grove High School and love the chance to visit my hometown and alma mater as much as I can. I am also a proud graduate of The University of Toledo with my Bachelor’s in Communication and Film. On the weekends I can often be found cheering on my Rockets…when the Buckeyes aren’t playing of course! When not spending time at work, you can usually find me watching an old movie, senseless reality television, reading a good book, or listening to The Beatles! I also love getting to spend time with my friends and visiting my family in South Carolina!
