Professor Maria Ignatieva invites her theatre class and campus community to join the discussion, "The Laramie Project." The play is based on the tragic events and death of Matthew Shepard, an openly gay college student who was brutally beaten in Laramie, Wyoming, in 1998, and who later died. Shepard's murder is one of the most well-known hate crimes in recent American history. In 2009, the U.S. Congress passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, a piece of legislation that strengthens existing hate crime laws. The three-act play is written for eight actors, who play more than 50 different characters.

“The Laramie Project” has been staged at high schools, colleges, and professional theatres across the United States and the world.
