2018 Spring for Scholarships
Former Ohio State and NFL football player William White returned to his hometown as the keynote speaker for the 2018 Spring for Scholarships event at Ohio State Lima.
White spoke of education as an investment in time and effort for the students and in scholarship dollars for the attendees.
“You are helping the economy of the great state of Ohio by giving,” White said. “It really is an investment. According to a student life survey, 93 percent of the students who graduate from Ohio State Lima intend to stay in the state. 93 percent.”
Ohio State Lima has been at the top of the list of Ohio State campuses for graduates two years running who want to stay in the state and build lives and careers, and someday pay it forward to the next generation of students.
Student speaker Levi Brake (2018, BS Education) is starting already to build up the next generation. He spent his senior year teaching at Liberty Arts Magnet in Lima.
“These students need me to be a mentor, a confidante, a shelter, and sometimes they need me to be a verbal kick to the backside, to remind them who they are, what they want, and what they need to do in order to get there,” Brake said. “I may not have the fiscal means to invest in future generations right now, but, for now, I will invest my time and every ounce of energy I have into my students to pay back this community.”
The students’ gratitude and dedication made an impression on White. In the midst of his address, he threw in a tour of the Woody Hayes complex as an impromptu live auction item. After a bidding war between the evening’s emcee Jeff Tracy and board member Larry Webb, the two both donated to the scholarship fund.
With the nearly $30,000 raised at Spring for Scholarships 2018, the scholarship fund now has more than $400,000 devoted to student aid.
