Ohio State Lima hosts forum to increase economic opportunities and social mobility

June 14, 2018

The Ohio State University at Lima will host a community forum to generate ideas to increase economic opportunities for Ohio families as part of the Alliance for the American Dream partnership program between The Ohio State University and Schmidt Futures. The forum is planned for 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Fri., June 15, 2018, at the City Club in Lima.

Approximately 30-35 community leaders from the region are expected to attend, including faculty of the university.

As part of a larger commitment toward promoting shared prosperity, Schmidt Futures has awarded Ohio State a $1.5 million grant to kick-start a vibrant and inclusive idea development process. This conversation will engage the university community alongside business, government and community partners in a robust brainstorming process.

The Alliance will focus on developing ideas to strengthen the middle class and help move people out of poverty. It seeks to inspire investment in research and development across public, private and nonprofit sectors, and to build effective partnerships between academic communities and engineers, scientists, policymakers, investors and community advocates.

The goal of the initial phase of the partnership is to raise the net incomes of 10,000 households by 10 percent by 2020 in targeted Ohio communities. Idea forums will be held in the communities that are homes to an Ohio State campus.

In addition to the idea forums, the university is soliciting ideas through an online submission process through mid-July. After the submission process closes, the university will select 10 ideas to further develop. By December 2018, the university will put forth the top three ideas to Schmidt Futures for the next round of funding consideration.
