Public is invited to Ohio State Lima gallery opening with artist Nicole Gordon Jan. 18
Chicago artist Nicole Gordon will be at Ohio State Lima to open her show Like Everyone Else from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Thur. Jan. 18, 2018, in the Farmer Family Gallery.
Gordon’s high-definition, high gloss paintings begin where dreamlike landscapes dotted with destruction intersect with popular culture in surprising and often hilarious scenarios.
Many of Gordon’s pieces focus on timeless and nostalgic images that take a step out of reality and into the dreamier world of imagination with the addition of high-key colors and familiar images in unexpected places.
“Each timeless setting has been infiltrated by imagery that represents the chaos that invades the quiet space that we long for,” Gordon said. “The heightened colors and out-of-place objects create absurd and sometimes disturbing stage-like scenes that cannot possibly exist in nature and become an alternate reality. The landscapes reference fairy tale settings in which complex and often disturbing narratives are revealed within a context of dreamlike prettiness. The disturbance to the serenity animates the setting and breathes new life into the space, highlighting the tension between the artificial and the real.”
In Like Everyone Else, viewers will recognize the Mad Hatter’s cups from Alice in Wonderland spinning in an icy landscape and everyday household items transferred to a mysterious woods. Like Everyone Else includes eight oil on canvas paintings and runs Jan. 18-March 2, 2018, in the Farmer Family Gallery in Ohio State Lima’s Reed Hall.
The opening and the exhibit are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m., weekdays.
