History: College of Humanities

What is History? Lima History Department Pages
Students of history explore why societies change over time and the impact these changes have on the course of individual lives and across generations, as well as on local, national, and international affairs. The study of history enables us to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. In a world increasingly crowded with people and troubled with social problems and dangers, history is essential to preserving and promoting freedom. As a university student, you are creating history, and you will determine the historical legacy of your society, your country, and your world. To do this responsibly, we all need to enter actively into the debate about the past by studying it with care and imagination.

Career Opportunities

History prepares students for a wide variety of careers because history majors develop a keen understanding of the complexities of organized society, as well as strong critical thinking, analytical, research, and communication skills. Ohio State job placement surveys indicate that our history majors develop careers in fields such as law, journalism, information management, business, publishing, education, social work, library and archival management, and historical reservation. History is also a well-recognized preparation for law school as well as other professional and graduate degree programs.

Opportunities In History At The Ohio State University at Lima Campus

The Ohio State University at Lima offers the history student personal attention through smaller class sizes as well as motivated faculty who are subject to the same rigorous standards of academic excellence required of all Ohio State professors. History majors work closely with faculty who specialize in a wide variety of fields and have opportunities to participate in independent research, field trips, social organizations, and honorary societies.

In association with Honors History 151 and 152, the History Department offers field trips on alternate years to the Civil War Battlefield of Gettysburg, and to the historic Underground Railroad homes of John Rankin and John Parker located on the banks of the Ohio River in Ripley, Ohio. The Lima Campus also boasts an active History Club whose mission is to promote historical insight, develop relationships among peers, and have fun! The History Club meets these goals through organizing a Brown Bag Lunch Series, a Film Series, inter-club competitions, dinner, fundraisers, and field trips.
