Event description: Manuscripts in the Medieval Printing House
By the turn of the sixteenth century, William Caxton’s Westminster press had printed numerous first editions of texts that previously circulated only in handwritten copies. Of the manuscript exemplars used by the printer to produce these editiones princeps, some have been identified and others likely were lost or destroyed. What can the evidence on pages and in paratexts tell us about the utility and value of manuscript books in an emerging culture of print and printing?
