History

What is History?  Lima History Department Pages
Students of history explore why societies change over time and the impact these changes have on the course of individual lives and across generations, as well as on local, national, and international affairs. The study of history enables us to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. In a world increasingly crowded with people and troubled with social problems and dangers, history is essential to preserving and promoting freedom. As a university student, you are creating history, and you will determine the historical legacy of your society, your country, and your world. To do this responsibly, we all need to enter actively into the debate about the past by studying it with care and imagination.

Career Opportunities

History prepares students for a wide variety of careers because history majors develop a keen understanding of the complexities of organized society, as well as strong critical thinking, analytical, research, and communication skills. Ohio State job placement surveys indicate that our history majors develop careers in fields such as law, journalism, information management, business, publishing, education, social work, library and archival management, and historical preservation. History is also a well-recognized preparation for law school as well as other professional and graduate degree programs.
