State conservationist highlights Lima's on-the-ground innovation

Ohio State Lima showcases regenerative farm to NRCS State Technical Committee

Seeing conservation technology in action is crucial for addressing Northwest Ohio’s water quality concerns, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service officials during a recent visit to The Ohio State University at Lima.

John Wilson, state conservationist for Ohio NRCS, joined 40 members of the NRCS State Technical Committee to inspect the campus’s Regenerative Farm and its drainage water recycling system firsthand.

“It’s always good to see things on the ground,” Wilson said. “We can talk about it, we can show pictures of it, but when you see it on the ground and what it’s doing to address those resource concerns, it gives you a better picture. These kind of activities help brighten that light so you can see a bigger picture of how things work together in order to address those resources.”

The State Technical Committee serves an advisory role to the state conservationist, offering analysis, expertise and recommendations on technical standards, program priorities and emerging conservation issues across the state. Composed of agricultural producers, state agency representatives and environmental partners, the committee’s summer tour through Northwest Ohio allowed members to observe regional water quality initiatives in person. While at Ohio State Lima, the group examined field tile drainage infrastructure, water retention structures and soil monitoring setups designed to capture and reuse nutrient-rich runoff.

That on-the-ground testing plays a vital role for local agriculture: It allows university researchers to absorb the financial risks and operational learning curves of new practices so area farmers do not have to. By testing innovative conservation techniques on campus fields first, Ohio State provides local growers with proven blueprints before they make costly investments on their own operations.

Vinayak Shedekar, assistant professor of agricultural water management at Ohio State, emphasized that sharing both successes and failures is key to helping producers succeed.

“We like to say that we would make the mistakes that you then will learn from,” Shedekar said. “So even if this is a success story we are trying to demonstrate, I would like to say that there are some mistakes and errors that we would like people to learn from. That is why we are more strategic with what we do in our farming systems here on the campus, because we have a mix of success stories and some challenges.”

By working alongside university researchers, state conservation leaders hope to refine sustainable farming methods and accelerate their adoption across Ohio’s agricultural landscape.
