Social Work Field Experience

What is Field?

Field Education has been identified as the signature pedagogy of social work, by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Signature pedagogy is the method by which a student learns their profession; for social work, that is in field education. Field Education is where you will put your classroom learning into practice, engaging with other social workers, and developing your professional identity. The field placement experience is designed to help you integrate your classroom knowledge into the practice setting. You can expect the following:

  • Developing a learning agreement that will guide
  • your learning and practice experiences in your
  • agency setting
  • Working one-on-one with a field instructor at your
  • agency who focuses on your learning agreement
  • Completing weekly reflections and supervision log
  • entries
  • Being in the field two to three days per week,
  • depending on your program
  • Utilizing the Field Database to manage all
  • documents electronically
  • Practicing engagement, interviewing, assessment
  • and evaluation
  • Working with other professionals on a regular basis
  • to learn from them
  • Becoming competent in the practices of a
  • professional social worker

Where can you do Field?

There are a variety of agencies that are available to you as an Ohio State Lima

student! Many students also choose to coordinate their field placement with their home county.   Our faculty will explore with junior-level students their unique interests at the start of Spring semester as the placement process begins.

If you don't see an agency that interests you, don't worry! This is not a comprehensive list, and agencies are always changing.  The following are some of our current Affiliate Agencies that partner with Ohio State Lima.
