The program in English at The Ohio State University at Lima offers the same world-class education as the campus in Columbus but with smaller class size and more individual attention. Students may complete the four-year program in Lima, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree. They may also complete minors in English and Professional Writing.

The English Major
The Lima English program offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of literary and popular texts. Students may find themselves reading Jane Austen in one class then analyzing movies by Alfred Hitchcock or Martin Scorsese in the next. On other occasions, they might peer through the lens of postcolonial criticism at novelists like J. M. Coetzee, or read short stories by ZZ Packer that delineate the African-American experience. In other words, the study in English provides students not only with a solid foundation in canonical American and British literary texts, but encourages them to grapple with the entire range of human, literary expression.

Beyond the Classroom
Students will have many exciting opportunities outside the classroom. A few of these include internships, assisting faculty with research projects, presenting research at conferences and forums, studying internationally, tutoring in the Writing Center, taking field trips, and editing the international undergraduate literary journal Asterism.
Career Prospects in English
English majors are prepared for entry-level jobs in a wide variety of fields, including business, communications, finance, human resources, journalism, marketing, publishing, sales, and technology. In addition, many graduates attend law school, library school, medical school, or business school. Teaching is another popular choice. Graduates may pursue a master’s degree in Education and qualify to teach K-12. Those graduates wishing to teach college pursue a master’s degree or doctorate in English, or an MFA in creative writing.
The study of English prepares students to think critically about texts; to construct arguments based on evidence; to write elegantly and persuasively; and to understand the historical and cultural contexts in which texts are produced, disseminated, and received.
