Johnny Appleseed Metroparks District naturalist and Ohio State Lima alumna Marie Walton kicks off the Eclipse Science Series discussing some of the things we already know about animal behavior during an eclipse, the historical challenges to recording animal data during an eclipse, and ways the audience can help contribute to the scientific knowledge gathered during an eclipse. Walton will highlight a citizen science initiative funded by NASA that is still taking applications for citizen scientists to receive science-grade equipment to record animal behavior on April 8.

Marie Walton graduated from The Ohio State University Lima campus in spring of 2023 with a degree in Zoology with honors and research distinction honors. She now works in her dream career of being a naturalist in the education department for the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District here in Allen County. During her time at The Ohio State University at Lima, Marie pursued research on how different species of butterflies and moths repopulate a prairie following a total prairie burn, which she is currently working on turning into an academic research paper with Dr. Robin Bagley. With an avid interest in the animal world, Marie looks forward to continuing to learn about the fascinating creatures we share the world with and teaching you more about them along the way!
