Like other universities, Ohio State Lima serves as an important training ground for creating engaged citizens, productive workers, and compassionate community members. With the best of intentions, faculty, staff, and students work hard to learn from people whose identities and life experiences may differ from their own. Experience and research has revealed that the goals of creating thriving inclusive campuses and classrooms are often hampered by implicit biases created across a lifetime and through thousands of messages from educational, community, and entertainment influences. This Undoing Unproductive Thinking training and dialogue session provides information on how to understand, navigate and minimize implicit bias. This engaging two-hour session relies on anti-deficit and self-reflective approaches, a mix of both information and application of this information, and an emphasis on community building. Faculty and staff will learn effective techniques to recognize and work through their biases to create welcoming spaces that value all Ohio State Lima community members.
