The Ohio State University at Lima’s Department of Theatre, Film and Media Arts presents The Snow Queen the weeks of November 4 and 11, in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts. Public performances are at 7 p.m., Saturday, November 16, 2024, and 2 p.m., Sunday, November 17.

Tickets are $2 for all children 10 and younger, $5 for seniors, students and children 11 and older, and $7 for adults. Tickets are available at the Box Office, which opens one hour before each performance. Maps to campus are available at lima.osu.edu

Hans Christian Andersen's classic children's story The Snow Queen is adapted for the stage by Dr. Maria Ignatieva, Martha W. Farmer Endowed Professor of Theatre, who also directs. Her adaptation tells the tale of a brave little girl determined to rescue her brother from the palace of the Snow Queen.

“This fairy tale has inspired a wealth of interpretations, among the most recent is Frozen, but ours also differs from the others,” Ignatieva said. “One of the themes in the play, which is very dear to me, is the ability of the characters to change – to become braver, more generous. Even the Snow Queen has a chance to change.”

The play is geared towards children K-4 and their families and will include both school visits and public performances. Run time is 40 minutes. The stage has transformed into a Nordic wonderland under the direction of guest designer and scenery builder Chris Anich.

“More than 50,000 elementary school children have attended our Theatre for Young Audiences productions in its 29 years of existence. Many were introduced to the art of theatre for the first time in Ohio State Lima’s theatre,” Ignatieva said. “The Ohio State Lima students and faculty have dedicated a lot of time and effort to creating their characters, working as crew members, running lights and sounds, and stage managing the production. We can’t wait to welcome students to campus this year.”

The Snow Queen is a production of the Theatre for Young Audiences program. More than 1,700 K-4 students will visit the Ohio State Lima campus over two weeks for school performances. Participating local schools include Allen County ESC, Anna, Bluffton, Cory-Rawson, Freedom Elementary, Holy Rosary, Liberty Arts Magnet, Lima Area Homeschoolers, Parkway, Perry, Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Rose, Shawnee Maplewood, Sidney, Spencerville and Waynesfield-Goshen.

The Theatre for Young Audiences program was established at Ohio State Lima in 1995 and has been welcoming elementary-aged children to its autumn performances in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts ever since.
