From the dean: Now is the time to take another look at Lima

Why now is the right time to take another look at Ohio State Lima

The Ohio State University at Lima campus is oftentimes still called “the branch.” This word can bring to mind the thought of something small or secondary—off to the side of the main trunk. But anyone who considers how growth truly takes place knows what is vitally important: branches are where leaves form, where energy is created, and where new growth begins.

At Ohio State Lima, we don’t just operate as a branch—we grow Buckeyes.

For students across northwest Ohio, our campus is where curiosity takes root, confidence develops, and futures begin to take shape. And in a moment when many people are asking whether higher education is still worth it, the answer here is grounded in something steady and forward-looking: growth.

Growing for a future we can’t fully see

The students choosing higher education today are preparing for a world that is still unfolding. Career paths are becoming less and less linear. Technologies are transforming how work gets done. Many graduates will change roles—and even industries—multiple times over their lives.

In this environment, education is not about predicting the future. It’s about preparing students for it.

At Ohio State Lima, students develop a wide range of skills that allow them to adapt and thrive: critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and clear communication. They learn how to connect ideas across disciplines and apply knowledge in real-world contexts. Most importantly, they learn the value of continual, lifelong learning—an ability that will serve them long after any promotion or potential job change.

This is how Buckeyes grow: not all at once, but steadily, with strong roots.

The Humanities: Where meaning takes shape

Some of the most important growth on our campus happens in the humanities courses: in history, philosophy, and communication.  These degree paths are sometimes questioned in conversations about return on investment. Yet these disciplines are essential to helping students make sense of complexity and express ideas with clarity and purpose.

Studying history helps students understand how societies change—and what happens when they fail to learn from the past. Philosophy teaches them to wrestle with ethical questions and examine assumptions. Communication studies help students share ideas in ways that are persuasive, thoughtful, and grounded in understanding.

These are not abstract skills. They show up in workplaces as leadership, collaboration, and innovation. They show up in communities as civic engagement, empathy, and the ability to navigate differences. In a time when ideas move rapidly and competition for one’s attention is heightened, the ability to communicate meaningfully is a distinct advantage.

Big Ten roots, local soil

One of the strengths of Ohio State Lima is that students don’t have to choose between world-class resources and local access. Here, they receive the benefits of The Ohio State University—one of the nation’s leading public research institutions—while learning in a setting that is personal, supportive, and close to home.

Small class sizes allow faculty to know students by name. Advisors work closely with students to build clear academic pathways. At the same time, students are fully connected to Ohio State’s curriculum, standards, and degree options.

The Regional Campus Commitment: A clear path forward

Ohio State’s new Regional Campus Commitment covers tuition and mandatory fees for eligible students who begin at a regional campus and meet established income requirements. Beyond financial access, the program ensures that students who meet defined academic milestones are guaranteed continued access to Ohio State degree pathways.

That clarity matters. Students can start close to home, build confidence and momentum, and move forward knowing their options remain open—whether completing an associate degree, transitioning to a bachelor’s program, or continuing their education over time.

Growth does not require rushing. It requires direction, support, and sustained opportunity.

New ways to grow: Online associate degrees

Growth also looks different for different students. Many balance education with work, family responsibilities, or caregiving. Recognizing that reality, Ohio State Lima offers an online associate degree that allows students to engage with Ohio State coursework on a schedule that fits their lives.

This option expands access for adult learners, working professionals, and those who need flexibility without sacrificing quality. Online students are still Buckeyes—connected to Ohio State’s academic expectations, advising, and pathways forward.

It is another way we are ensuring that opportunity can take root wherever students are in whatever ways meet their individual needs best.

Growing Buckeyes, strengthening the region

Ohio State Lima is deeply rooted in northwest Ohio. Our students live here, work here, and contribute here—even while they are still in school. That connection strengthens the region and ensures that education remains relevant, responsive, and engaged.

Graduates leave not only with degrees, but with the ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and lead with purpose. Many stay. Others return. All carry with them the capacity to help shape a future we cannot yet fully see.

Is it time to take another look?

In a noisy national conversation about higher education, the work happening at Ohio State Lima is quieter—but no less important. It is about growth: of students, of opportunity, and of the region itself.

If you’ve ever thought of Ohio State Lima as “the branch,” I invite you to take a fresh look at what it has become—and what it continues to build.
