Apollo students use Ohio State Lima campus as learning lab

Apollo instructor Chris Washam works with his students

The college students at The Ohio State University at Lima use the campus as a learning laboratory every day. Now an even broader range of students is taking advantage of the space.

Students in the Construction Equipment Technology program at the Apollo Career Center are putting the skills they are learning to work to improve the drainage around the sports fields at The Ohio State University at Lima.

“Everything here is a learning experience for everyone,” said Apollo senior James Schiffhauer. “It's just so much to take in. There is just so much to learn.”

Construction Equipment Technology Instructor Chris Washam was a student in the Ohio State education program in the 1990s and is happy to be back with his students.

“This is our construction laboratory. It just happens to be mobile. We'll take our lab to your lab,” he said. “It teaches them everything. Community service is some of the stuff they get, teamwork right here. They have to work as a team.”

The work will continue through Apollo’s school year and into the 2023-2024 academic year. Weather permitting, the crew hopes to install a drainage tile at the baseball field on the west side of campus and cut a new ditch near Mumaugh Road before classes pause for the summer.
