October was a big month at Ohio State Lima. The Social Work Department hosted two impactful campus outreach events in the G. Gilbert Cloyd Student Commons in Galvin Hall. Designed to bridge classroom theory with community action, these programs provided students with hands-on insight into policy engagement and professional social work careers.

The month began with Advocacy Day, held on October 12, 2026, which empowered current students to build practical skills in policy advocacy and civic leadership. The event featured panel discussions with state representatives and senators detailing legislative processes, local government officials discussing municipal and grassroots decision-making, and alumni and community advocates offering strategies for real-world impact.

"Bringing Advocacy Day to campus bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world impact,” said Stephanie Price, social work program coordinator. “By grounding our students in a hands-on civics lesson, we are not just teaching policy. We are equipping the future leaders of our agencies, communities and businesses with the exact tools, confidence and vision needed to drive meaningful systemic change."

Closing out the month, Ohio State Lima welcomed 37 prospective high school students for A Day in the Life of a Social Worker. Attendees experienced an immersive day that included attending social work lectures, engaging with practicing social worker panels, and exploring regional career pathways through an agency fair featuring more than 15 local organizations. Following the visit, 22 of the students report an interest in either social work or another behavioral health field.

“All students expressed how helpful it was to visit with the social workers representing our various community agencies,” Price said. “Their personal conversations were truly impactful in helping them see themselves in behavioral health as professional social workers.”
