Young Ah Lee, associate professor of Education, starts off the Spring Semester Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series at The Ohio State University at Lima with “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the best of them all?: The role of self-study in teacher education for social justice” at 4 p.m., Thur., Jan. 21, in the Special Collections Room of the Campus Library.
Lee’s lecture will introduce self-study as a tool for promoting learning and teaching that is socially just and include descriptions of what, how, and why to consider self-study and the self-study examples that were conducted by the presenter and that have shape the presenter’s professional and personal life.
The Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series will highlight the research interest areas and other interests of various faculty members throughout the year. Also in the series:
Patrick Carroll, associate professor of Psychology, looks at “Self-revision: Understanding changes in present and possible selves over time” at 4 p.m., Thur., Feb. 25, 2016, in the Special Collections Room of the Campus Library. Carroll will discuss his research program on the social revision of core present selves and possible selves over time. He will review his earlier work on the determinants of possible self-revision in response to social feedback from others (parents, counselors, or peers). In the second part of the talk, Carroll will examine his recent work on the ultimate consequences of these socially-induced possible self-revisions for broader revisions in core self-integrity (measured by self-esteem, self-doubt) and well-being over time. He will close by discussing the practical as well as theoretical implications of these findings for helping parents and educators to not only understand (1) the initial determinants but, as importantly, (2) the ultimate consequences of inducing possible self-revision for broader revisions in the quality of students' core selves and well-being over time.
Ed Valentine, professor of Fine Art, talks about his latest show in “A Little Bit About This and That – Recent Work and What Built It” at 4 p.m., Thur., March 24, 2016, in the Farmer Family Gallery in Reed Hall. Valentine is a painter and will focus on his work since 2014.
Mohamed Yousif, professor of Mathematics, tells his story since his arrival in North America more than 40 years ago in “Islamophobia: A personal story” at 4 p.m., Thur., April 21, 2016, in the Special Collections Room of the Campus Library. He will include stories of how he integrated into society, teaching math, doing research, and extended research stays around the world.
