GENERAL CHEMISTRY

CHEM 1210 General Chemistry I, Undergraduate, 5 Semester hours (4 class, 3 lab hours); Au and Sp

Chemistry 1210 and 1220 is a general inorganic chemistry course sequence for science majors. The same textbook is used for the two course sequence. This sequence begins twice each academic year with CHEM 1210 offered both autumn and winter terms. The courses consist of lecture, recitation, and laboratory sessions. This first course for science majors, covers dimensional analysis, atomic structure, the mole, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, thermochemistry, electron configuration, bonding, molecular structure, gases, liquids, and solid. Prerequisite: One unit of high school chemistry and eligibility to enroll in Math 1149 or above(Math Placement Level L or M); This course is available for EM credit. GE physical science course with lab. Natural science conditional admission course.

CHEM 1220 General Chemistry II, Undergraduate, 5 Semester hours (4 class, 3 lab hours); Au and Sp

Continuation of CHEM 1210 for science majors, covering solutions, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, solutbility and ionic equilbria, qualitative analysis, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, descriptive chemistry, coordination compounds, and nucler chemistry. Prerequisite: CHEM 1210; eligibility to enroll in Math 1149 or above (Math Placement Level L or M). This course is available for EM credit. GE physical science course with lab. Natural science conditional admission course.

CHEM 1250 General Chemistry for Engineers, Undergraduate, 4 Semester hours (3 class, 3 lab hours); Sp

Chemistry 1250 is a general chemistry course for most engineering majors (other than chemical and environmental engineering). The class consists of lecture and laboratory sessions. This course is offered during spring term. General Chemistry for engineering students covers dimensional analysis, the mole, stoichiometry, chemical reactioins, states of matter, solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. Prerequisite: One unit of high school chemistry and eligibility to enroll in Math 1149 or above (Math Placement Level L or M). GE physical science course with lab. This course is available for EM credit.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

CHEM 2510 Organic Chemistry I, Undergraduate, 4 Semester hours (4 class hours); Au only

Chemistry 2510 and 2520 form an organic chemistry course sequence for science and many pre-health professions majors. The class consists of lecture and recitation. The same textbook is generally used for the entire organic chemistry course sequence. This sequence begins once each academic year in autumn term with Chemistry 2510.. Introduction to structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation, and reactions of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, and aldehydes and ketones. Other topics include stereochemictry, acids and bases, and reaction mechanisms. Prerequisite: CHEM 1220

CHEM 2520 Organic Chemistry II, Undergraduate, 4 Semester hours (4 class hours); Sp only

Continuation from CHEM 2510. Includes aromatic systems, carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines, carbon-arbon bonding forming reactions, polymers, carbohydrates, and amino acids. Prerequisite: CHEM 2510

CH 2310 Introductory Organic Chemistry, Undergraduate, 4 Semester hours (4 class hours); Sp only

Chemistry 2310 is an introductory organic chemistry course presented as a condensed introduction to organic chemistry through functional groups and practical applications. The class consists of lecture and recitation. While not in the standard sequence for science majors, this course would provide substantial preparation for the organic chemistry series CHEM 2510 and 2520. Prerequisite: CHEM 1110 or 1220 or 1250

CHEM 2540 Organic Chemistry Laboratory I, Undergraduate, 2 Semester hours (1.5 lecture and 4 lab hours); Au only

Organic Chemistry Laboratory consists of Chemistry 2540 and 2550. This is an organic chemistry laboratory sequence for science and many pre-health professions majors. The class consists of a lab lecture and laboratory session. This laboratory sequence begins in autumn term with Chemistry 2540.Introduction to spectroscopic characterization, scientific writing, computational chemistry, and the laboratory techniques of organic chemistry including synthesis, isolation, purification, and identification of organic compounds. Prerequisite or Concurrent: CHEM 2510

CHEM 2550 Organic Chemistry Laboratory II, Undergraduate, 2 Semester hours (1.5 lecture and 4 lab hours); Sp only

Continuation of Chemistry 2540 including synthesis, purification, and identification of organic compounds Prerequisite: CHEM 2540 Prerequisite or Concurrent: CHEM 2520
