Ohio State Lima staff member receives surprise visit, prestigious award

Ron Kaufman was surprised by university officials, colleagues and family members with the Ohio State University Distinguished Staff Award, April 12, 2018, at Ohio State Lima.

“Providing outstanding and ongoing excellence in service, Ron professionally navigates relationships and the needs of both Ohio State Lima and Rhodes State College. There is a strong focus on the beautification of our campus and he has engaged his staff to willingly and wonderfully contribute to that beauty,” Interim Dean and Director Joe Brandesky wrote in his nominating letter. “Ron is a devoted leader who goes above and beyond and does so of his own volition because he is a principled employee. He is devoted to the students at both institutions, his community and his colleagues.”

Kaufman currently serves as the Facilities Superintendent for both The Ohio State University at Lima and Rhodes State College. In that role, he is responsible for the physical facilities for both institutions. He directs plant maintenance, grounds and custodial services, including all current physical facilities and the planning, design and construction of new facilities.
The Distinguished Staff Award annually honors 12 individuals for their outstanding achievements, service, leadership and dedication to The Ohio State University. The Distinguished Staff Award is the highest honor bestowed upon staff at the university since its inception in 1984.

As one of the 12 award recipients across all the campuses of Ohio State, Kaufman will be invited to a luncheon in Columbus on Friday, May 4, and will receive a $1,500 cash award, $700 base salary increase and crystal trophy.

All part-time and full-time staff with a minimum of five years of continuous service at Ohio State in a regular non-faculty position may be nominated. Award recipients were selected on the merits and strengths of the following contributions:

• Enhancing the quality of work life in ways that make a significant difference for colleagues or customers.

• Providing outstanding and ongoing excellence in service to faculty, staff, students, community, and/or other customers.

• Developing creative solutions to problems that result in significantly more effective and efficient department or university operations.

• Consistent demonstration of one or more of the university’s values: Excellence, Collaborating as One University, Acting with Integrity and Personal Accountability, Openness and Trust, Diversity in People and Ideas, Change and Innovation, Simplicity in Our Work, Empathy and Compassion, and Leadership.
