Power of the Pen Northwest Region Creative Writing Tournament

About this event

The Regional round of Northwest Region 7th- and 8th-grade creative writing tournaments organized by North Canton educational nonprofit Power of the Pen will begin on Saturday, March 8. The tournament is sponsored by The Ohio State University at Lima and Block Communications, home of The Toledo Blade.

This spring the 2024-2025 season tournaments began with two district tournaments held at Coldwater Middle School and Tiffin Middle School. Approximately 145 students from 27 area schools will compete in the Ohio State Lima tournament. The top students from the Regional tournament will be invited to the State tournament on May 21-22, hosted by Ashland University.
Power of the Pen, one of Ohio’s largest educational enhancement programs, seeks to positively impact the state’s middle schoolers by helping young people find and develop their own unique creative voice.

The Northwest Region of Power of the Pen includes Allen, Auglaize, Defiance, Fulton, Hardin, Hancock, Henry, Lucas, Mercer, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Shelby, Williams, Wood, Wyandot, and Van Wert Counties.

About this event

The Ohio State University at Lima invites high school sophomore and junior girls to the tenth-annual
STEM STEPS, an enriching and exciting day filled with hands-on activities in various STEM fields to encourage and stimulate an interest in science. The event empowers young women to achieve success in STEM fields by instilling self-confidence and a can-do attitude. Students will also learn the role of women in STEM fields and see how they can impact the world with STEM education.

Keynote speaker: Dr. Alison Gardner, a native Coloradoan, developed a love and respect for horses at a young age by participating in an equine therapy program for at-risk youth. She attended Colorado State for her Bachelors and Masters, then joined the DVM class of 2011 at CSU. An internship at Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center led to a surgery residency at Ohio State, followed by an Emergency and Critical Care fellowship. She became an Assistant Professor at OSU in 2017, promoted to Associate Professor in 2022, and was appointed to her dual-appointment Clinical Skills Educator role in 2023. She received the John Lyman Award for Clinical Teaching Excellence in 2020 and the Zoetis Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2024.

At OSU, Dr. Gardner works as an attending on the equine and critical care service and as a Clinical Skills Educator in OSU's top-ranked Clinical Skills Center. She is passionate about teaching and has been involved in curricular design and admissions.

About this event

Ohio Internship and Co-op Appreciation Day celebrates and raises awareness of internship and co-op opportunities in Ohio and helps promote the creation of more internship and co-op programs at businesses throughout the state. This day will help grow the internship culture in addition to strengthening Ohio’s workforce.

Ohio State Lima will recognize this by promoting internship opportunities to students and raffling off prizes. Students will be entered into the drawing by reporting details of their internship to Career Development via e-mail, or by logging into the campus job board, Handshake, with Career Development during Intern Appreciation days.

Professional headshots will be offered free of charge for student attendees! Students are encouraged to utilize their professional headshot to enhance their social media presence and exhibit a professional personal brand, all while searching for internships and jobs.

This month-long celebration is designed to raise awareness regarding the benefits of internships, and create a culture where students are encouraged to obtain work related experience while in college. Campus Mock Interviews provide an ideal opportunity to practice and improve your virtual interview skills with experienced recruiters from real companies. Virtual mock interviews are 30-minute sessions conducted via Zoom and are a simulation of a “real” interview. Following the interview, students receive valuable feedback from employers/professional partners on their interviewing skills, including responses to traditional and behavioral based questions, use of nonverbal communication, etc.

Mock Interviews will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and Wednesday, March 26, 2025 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. via Zoom.
